The tiny town of Te Hana is another that's easy to drive straight through but in fact, it's home to a couple of world class cultural gems.
Things to do
World renown master carver and sculptor Kerry Strongman's studio and factory is tucked just behind the Te Hana cafe. His incredible Jewellery For Giants sculptures are displayed all over the world but there's no need to travel to art galleries in Europe, just head to Te Hana.
Another must is a visit to the Maori Cultural Centre, to be transported back 300 years to the time of Princess Te Hana. Tours run throughout the day and larger groups can opt for a complete cultural experience including overnight stays.
Te Hana is just 4-5 minutes drive north of Wellsford, on State Highway One.
